Breakfast has often been described as the most important meal of the day. And for good reason. Nutrition experts say a good, hearty breakfast supplies the body with the calories and fuel it needs to jump start your day.
People who eat breakfast also tend to be healthier than those who don’t.
According to University of Colorado researcher Dr. Elizabeth Thomas, women who skipped morning meals fueled insulin resistance. This means that more insulin would be required to bring blood sugar levels back a more normal level.
During the study, the insulin resistance was short-term. However, if one were to skip breakfast chronically, the chances of developing type 2 diabetes increases significantly.
Dr. Thomas will be presenting her findings at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society. Dr. Thomas says she cannot underestimate the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. She says this may be the only surefire way of controlling weight and staving off type 2 diabetes.
According to the Oxford Academic Journal of Nutrition, 6 combined studies with over 96,000 participants provided further proof regarding the dangers of skipping breakfast and type 2 diabetes.
German researchers who conducted the studies found that people who skipped breakfast increased their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 6%. Shockingly, this data was found after skipping only one day of breakfast out of the week.
For each additional day missed, the chances of developing type 2 diabetes rose even further. Research shows that missing four to five days of breakfast can increase the chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 55%.
If you are at risk for developing diabetes, or type 2 is currently in your life, then it is recommended you don’t skip eating in the morning.
